If you live in the Chicago area and are interested in the gig, write to me at sportif@oak.westol.com. We also need someone in Phoenix. So pass the word. In a form of protest, I will not write a Chicago team report until we find a new correspondent. If you need to know stuff about the Blackhawks, pick up a damn newspaper. Really, would it bust your ass to pick up a paper once in a while? In place of the usual team report, I will now offer up several algebra problems in order for you, our valued readers, to keep your math skills razor sharp. So here goes... 1. Sarah can trace her ancestors back through 10 generations. She counts her parents as the first generation back and her four grandparents as the second generation back, and so on. Assuming no duplications, how many ancestors has she in these 10 generations? 2. Every February for the last four years the Samuelsons have vactioned in the Rocky Mountains. Each year their vacation costs about 5% more than the year before. They spent $800 for their vacation four years ago. Find the total amount they have spent for their vacations in the past four years. 3. While Frances Chang worked for the Acme Company, she received a 20% raise at the end of each year. If she earned $74,416 during the five years she worked there, what was her first year's salary? 4. On the first day of each year, Mr. Daniel invests $1000 at 6% interest compounded annually. What will be the value of the investment after 10 years? 5. Suppose that a certain female insect hatches 2x eggs, half of them female, and that one week later these x females each hatch 2x eggs, half of them females. If this process continues for y weeks and no insects die, find the number of insects descended from a single female. Give the answer in terms of x and y. 6. The first blow of a pile driver drives a post 100 cm into the ground. Each succeeding blow drives the post only 4/5 as far as the preceeding blow. How far has the post been driven after five hours? 7. A ferris wheel is 50 m in diameter. How far would a person riding the ferris wheel travel if the ferris wheel makes 38 revolutions per ride? 8. A carpenter is building a staircase from the first floor to the second floor. The second floor is 3.3 m above the first floor. Each step rises 22 cm. Not counting the second floor itself, how many stairs will there be? 9. Twenty-five light poles are to be installed at equal intervals along a city street and at each end. If the street is 1800 m long, how far apart should the poles be placed? 10. Every hour a cuckoo clock sounds as many times as the hour. How many times does it sound starting with the first sound at 1 PM and continuing on through the last sound at midnight?
