TEAM NEWS

by Bob Chebat, Phoenix Correspondents

Roenick out

If you haven't heard yet, Jeremy Roenick is out for the playoffs with a broken jaw. That news landed a hearty blow to the Coyotes' playoff chances. For more information on how the injury occurred, please see the feature article I wrote in this issue.

With the loss of Roenick, the acquisition of centerman Robert Reichel from the New York Islanders looks more important - and prophetic. Reichel will be looked to to provide more scoring than he was when he arrived in Phoenix. And for those of you not in the know, that was already a lot.

Reichel could take shifts with Keith Tkachuk, but more than likely Tkachuk will center his own line and Reichel will play with Rick Tocchet and Greg Adams.

Team struggling

The Coyotes were struggling even before Roenick was knocked out of the lineup. The team lost five of its last six games. Thankfully, the Dogs turned it around in the last game of the season in the rematch with Dallas. Nikolai Khabibulin shut down the Stars, who were without their top line of Modano, Lehtinen and Hull, for a 2-0 win.

The playoffs

The Coyotes will play the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs. Unlike Phoenix, the Blues are going into the playoffs on a hot streak. Pavol Demitra is hot. Scott Young is hot. Grant Fuhr is healthy. St. Louis won a preview in the second-to-last game of the regular season, 6-4.

This ain't gonna be a pretty series. If the Dogs start getting frustrated, look out. Tkachuk's gonna have to start throwing blows if the team needs a lift.
