Jacques Demers continues to tinker with the Tampa Bay Lightning's
lineup as his club remains at the bottom of the NHL standings. Within 24
hours, he acquired Alexandre Daigle from the Edmonton Oilers and Sami
Helenius from the Calgary Flames in separate deals.
To get Daigle, he surrended Alex Selivanov, a former 32-goal scorer
who has found it increasingly difficult to put the puck in the net the last
two seasons.
Daigle, a former first round draft choice (first overall in 1993) by
the Ottawa Senators, was dealt by the Philadelphia Flyers to the Edmonton
Oilers hours before being shipped to the Lightning. Within four days of the
trade, he agreed to a one-year contract extension. Financial terms were not
disclosed by the Lightning. This season, Daigle, who has three goals and
two assists in 32 games, will earn $1.9 million.
"We're extremely pleased to finish the deal so we can have Alex in
our lineup for another season," said assistant general manager Jay Feaster.
"He's a talented young player who we feel will play a major part in what we
plan to accomplish here in the future."
Demers said the acquisition of Daigle will add speed and overall
skill level to the club. In 370 NHL games, Daigle has 86 goals and 117
assists. His best season was in 1997 when he registered 51 points while
playing with the Ottawa Senators.
With Daigle in the lineup, the Lightning now employ two of the top
three picks in the 1993 draft. Chris Gratton, originally chosen by the
Lightning, was re-acquired from Philadelphia earlier in the season for Mikael
Renberg.
This is probably not the last deal Demers will make before the March
trading deadline. Rumors have circulated that the Lightning are interested
in acquiring buffalo's Matthew Barnaby. The Sabres were reportedly
interested in Wendel Clark, but have recently denied this. Demers has gone
on the record saying he is not looking to trade Clark due to his leadership
abilities. As the Lightning continue to lose games, look for Demers to
change his mind.
In other off-ice news, the St. Petersburg Times published a report
which states that owner Art Williams is looking to sell the team.
President and CEO Billy McGehee denied these rumors. However, the Lightning
are looking to unload the contracts of several underachieving veterans,
including Bill Ranford, Daren Puppa, Stephane Richer, and Benoit Hogue.
Meanwhile, the Lightning continue to lose games. They have dropped
the last six games, including a 10-1 thrashing against the Washington
Capitals on February 3rd. They have allowed 28 goals during this span while
only managing to score eight.
