TEAM NEWS

by Bob Chebat, Phoenix Correspondents

In the early stages of the season, the Phoenix Coyotes were
fortunate enough to have several days off between games, and were
also avoiding the injury bug. Through that part of the season, they
managed to capitalize on their opponents and run a series of 14
games without a loss. Since an undefeated month of November,
injuries have taken their toll, but the Coyotes still manage to
come out of games with points.
Since getting blown out in back to back contests early in January
against Edmonton (7-1) and Anaheim (4-1) on consecutive nights, the
Coyotes have only dropped two of their last 13 contests,
accumulating a record of 6-2-5 in the stretch. The only two losses
came against Philadelphia and Nashville. The Nashville loss was
avenged on Super Bowl Sunday. Phoenix will attempt the mighty
Flyers again before the next issue of LCS, but with the current
list of injuries, right now it would not appear to be too
promising.
Highlights of the last two weeks included Rick Tocchet notching his
400th career goal in Philadelphia where he spent the first eight
years of his career. Nikolai Khabibulin continues to amaze the
local critics with his outstanding play this season, particularly
the improvement using his glove. The one gaping weakness of Nik was
his glove hand. You could almost always beat him on the glove side.
During the shutout against the Blackhawks on the 6th of February,
Tony Amonte tested Nik on a breakaway and needless to say, he shook
his head as the Bulin Wall turned him away.
The Coyotes also released an alternate third jersey that they wore
for the first time in the game against Chicago. The jersey has a
green backdrop with a desert-like trim along the waist and sleeves,
features a desert creature called a gecko on the shoulder, and dons
only the head of the Coyote logo on the front. The team looked
great in them, and is now 1-0-0 when wearing the new threads. They
will be worn nine more times this season, including Wednesday night
against the LA Kings on ESPN.
Things will heat up for the desert dogs after Valentine's Day when
the club takes to the road for a seven- game, two and a half week
road trip that starts in Tampa Bay and has them working their way
up the coast to finish things off in Boston.
