TEAM NEWS

by Matt Barr, Buffalo Correspondent
|

A brief report this time, more of the comprehensive and
insightful coverage you've come to expect next time.
Look Out Below!
Your Buffalo Sabres are 3-9-3 since January 5th, and have lost
four in a row, including two the woebegotten Canadiens and
Capitals on February 6th and 7th. The team, once first overall
in the Eastern conference, sits a precipitous five points up on
eighth place Boston and Florida.
"It's hit a critical point right now," Lindy Ruff said. "It's past
being concerned. Scared is probably the word you can use." Well, we'll stick with words like "precipitous" and "woebegotten," but thanks, Coach.
Barnaby On His Way Out
As a highly visible, marketable commodity that the Sabres could
succeed without, Matt Barnaby has been subject of trade rumors
for a long time. Particularly after he threatens the team's
meal ticket now and then. Those rumors have reached a fever
pitch lately, reaching a crescendo after Bam Bam took about
402 minutes in penalties against Nashville and was a healthy
scratch against Los Angeles two games later.
An often repeated scenario had Barnaby winding up a Blackhawk,
where he'd be right at home, with Stu Barnes becoming a Sabre
in a three-way deal with the Penguins. Mike Wilson would
probably have to go, too.
Sarich to Make NHL Debut
Further festering speculation that a D-man was on his way
out, prime defenseman prospect Cory Sarich was recalled
from Rochester on Monday the 8th. Sarich had done nothing
in his first pro season to dissuade observers that he's
going to be an impact player in the NHL. Sarich's recall
along with Randy Cunneyworth came on the heels of Ruff's
promise to use some Amerks to shake up the roster after the
team's fourth straight loss.
