Regroup 1
Contributor: Kim Cautreels, Penn State women's ice hockey coach
Emphasis: Regrouping to enter zone.
Age Level: Beginners to intermediate.
Drill begins with forward along left boards (F1), left defense in neutral zone (D1) and right defense in neutral zone (D2) (see diagram at right).
Description: F1 starts with puck at offensive blue line and skates back toward the defense, who are backing up toward their own end.
F1 passes puck back to D1 and curls right toward center ice. D1 passes to D2, who then passes to F1. F1 takes puck and carries it into offensive
zone for a shot on goal.
This is the starting drill to introduce a regrouping system. This is used to teach defensemen to be patient when the puck comes out of the offensive
zone and wait for all of the forwards to get out of the zone before going back on the offensive.
Variations:
After going through the drill a few times, add more forwards into the mix to give the defensemen more options to pass to. Or, the defensemen could reverse
the play and pass back to the other defenseman before passing to forwards.
