Mile Skate
Contributor: Kim Cautreels, Penn State women's ice hockey coach.
Emphasis: Getting players into game shape.
Age Level: All.
Description: Drill begins with players in a group in corner. On whistle, players skate to blue line and back to goal line, red line to goal line,
far blue line to goal line, around far net to blue line and back to goal line, around net to red line and back to goal line, around net
to far blue line and back to goal line, then finally around net to far goal line and back to goal line.
Having skated this entire drill, players should have completed around a mile's worth of ice. This drill is great for getting players back into shape
following a long break or at the beginning of the season.
Variations:
Have half the team do the drill on one side of the ice. After they finish, have the other half do the same thing at the other end. With breaks in between
the players should be able to do the drill twice.
Alternating the skating between sides is also an option.
