Long Lead Pass Drill
Contributor: Ace Reporter Jim Iovino
Emphasis: Long lead passes by defensemen.
Age Level: All
Drill begins with defenseman at blue line and forward along boards at center ice (see diagram at right).
Description: On the whistle, the defenseman will hustle back into own end and pick up a puck behind their own net.
As the defenseman curls around the net with the puck, a forward will break from the far boards toward center ice. The
defenseman will hit the forward with a long lead pass, allowing the forward to go in on a breakaway.
This drill helps defensemen learn to pick their heads up as they gather pucks in their own end. It also makes them make
hard, crisp and accurate passes out of their own end. This drill simulates a team taking advantage of an ill-advised
line change by the opposition.
