PSU "56" Drill (five shooters, six shots)
Contributor: PSU Coach Joe Battista
Emphasis: Rebound readiness and shot release.
Age Level: All ages.
Drill begins with three fowards up front (F1, F2, F3) and two defensemen (P1, P2) at points (see diagram at right).
Shot 1: F1 cricles out of the corner and takes the puck to the net for a shot. F3 and F1 eye the rebound.
Shot 2: F2 then repeats, taking the puck to the net for a shot while F3 and F1 eye the rebound.
Shot 3: F1 picks up another puck in the corner and passes out to P1 for a point shot - the quicker the release the better and try to stress shooting low. F3 looks for rebound in slot, but does not try to tip or screen. F2 goes to the backdoor post looking for rebound.
Shot 4: F2 then repeats, passing out to P2 for a point shot while F3 eyes the rebound in the slot and F1 goes backdoor.
Shot 5: F1 passes to F3 in slot for one-timer and then (F1) goes to the net for rebound.
Shot 6: F2 then repeats, passing to F3 for one-timer and then following up the shot for a rebound.
Variations:
F1 and F2 can mix things up by giving cross-ice passes to the pointmen. Or they can pass indirectly to each other behind the net before setting up F3 in the slot or the pointmen. For example, F1 to F2 to F3.
The pointmen can also pass to each other before shooting. For example, F1 to P1 to P2 for the shot.
Finally, you can also add a defensive rover to pressure the puck wherever he chooses.
